There is no time more exciting than getting a new puppy and introducing them to their new home. At Eden Park Vets, we love meeting new additions to the family and helping your pet find his or her feet in the world. There is a lot to consider, especially if this is your first puppy, so our expert veterinary surgery team has included some valuable information below about looking after your new puppy.
Our Puppy Guide
Puppies should be between eight and twelve weeks old when they leave their mothers and litter mates. By this time, the pup should have had sufficient experience socialising with other dogs until he or she is old enough to safely meet more
It is vital for all puppies and dogs to be vaccinated to prevent life-threatening diseases. The first course of vaccines is often recommended two weeks apart, when your puppy is between eight to ten weeks old and should be done at an accredited veterinary surgery such as Eden Park Vets
After the first course of vaccines, you will be required to take your dog to be vaccinated on an annual basis to maintain the right levels of immunity against diseases. We welcome pet owners to our practice in Eden Park for yearly boosters
Vaccinations may have been started already by the breeder prior to you taking your new puppy home. When this is the case, make sure you take any paperwork with you for your vet to check. Our qualified vets are happy to look over any existing vaccine paperwork
It is also a good idea to take your puppy for an initial check-up at a veterinary surgery when first receiving them. Vets can fully examine the condition and health of your puppy and identify any problems early such as fleas or harmful intestinal parasites
Choose a veterinary surgery you feel comfortable and relaxed in, where you will be happy to return. Building a good relationship with your vet is beneficial as they will be familiar with your dog when returning for annual health checks
We also recommend getting your new puppy microchipped to ensure they can be brought back to you easily if he or she ever goes missing. At Eden Park Vets, we use specially designed equipment to quickly implant a microchip under the skin between the shoulder blades
Flea treatment is also something else to consider for your puppy. An age-old problem, flea infestations are year-round issue and every step should be taken to prevent them. For information about helpful products and preventions, contact our veterinary clinic in Eden Park
